Coming to Corning: Lino Tagliapietra and Glass Art Society Conference

Whether you are Glass Artist or just a fan of the medium, you’ll likely be excited to hear that both Lino Tagliapietra and the annual Glass Art Society (GAS) Conference are coming to the Corning Museum of Glass (CMOG) in early June 2016. Whether you visit Corning for Lino, the GAS conference or just to see the museum it’s well worth traveling to Corning, New York, especially in the late spring.

If you’ve not yet heard of Lino Tagliapietra, you’ll likely enjoy being introduced to his work. Lino is from the island of Murano (home to Venice’s glass industry), Italy where he began his career in glass at 11 years old as an apprentice. In 1990 he completed all previous employment contracts and began working for himself. His works vary, but his color palette combined with the large and elaborate vessels he’s known for are striking and unique.  Visit Lino’s website (opens new browser window) to see his works and learn more about the artist.

Lino who is currently in his early 80’s still travels the world and works in the hot glass studios of museums around the world. Last spring he visited the Toledo Museum’s glass pavilion for nearly 2 weeks of public demonstrations. This year he will be at the Corning Museum of Glass, from June 5th through June 8th working in the museum’s amphitheater hot shop. Tickets are available for $40 each day via the CMOG.com

If you are a glass artist, consider coming to the GAS conference June 9-11. There will be dozens of lectures from over 80 artists. There is also a chance to watch Lino work in the hot shop on June 9th.  A complete list of demonstrations, lectures and events is in the 24 page conference brochure – Download GAS 45th Annual Conference brochure. If you’ve ever wanted to hang out with a bunch of glass artists, this would be a great place to do it.

Today is the first day spring and that means the June 11th Ann Arbor Garden Walk is on the horizon. Annette is busy in the studio and looking forward to getting out and seeing friends and patrons at the show.

Have you always wanted to try to blow glass? Have you taken a “Try it Once” course and want to learn more? Baron Glassworks is a teaching studio, that hosts dozens of students each year. Annette offers classes to the public. Choose a single session where you’ll make 2 items or sign up for 4 or 8 weeks of class. The only prerequisite is an interest in glass and a commitment to wear only natural fiber clothing to class. Please contact use for information on Glassblowing Classes for information of classes.
